Many facts surrounding the case point towards a different cause. According to the Panamanian and Dutch authorities, it was an accident: the girls got lost and perished. The disappearance and subsequent death of the girls has never been satisfactorily explained. Not much later, the first remains were found. Nothing was found until months later, in June 2014, the backpack of the girls was found in a river. After their disappearance was noted, the biggest search and rescue operation in Panamanian history got underway. On April first, 2014, two young Dutch girls Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers went for a hike in the mountains outside the village of Boquete, Panama, where they were about to start two weeks of volunteer work.
